Microsoft Outlook Express (OE) has been a
popular email program for many years. However, version
6.0 introduced a problem for business users who need
to receive attachments such as the data files you may
have purchased from Prospects Influential.
In an effort to protect email users, Microsoft set
the security settings in OE 6 at a high level by default.
Often, these settings interfere with your ability to
open a harmless and vital attachment. The program may
disable your access to an email attachment, causing
it to be "greyed out" and un-clickable, and
warning you that it may be potentiall harmful to your
computer (ie, may carry a virus) like so:
"Outlook Express removed access to the following
unsafe attachments in your mail"
To get around this, it is necessary to turn off a setting.
In Outlook Express, click
- Tools
- Options
- Security (tab)
- Un-check "Do not allow attachments to be saved
that could potentially be a virus".
Since OE is not an anti-virus program, it cannot actually
determine whether an attachement has a virus or not;
we recommend that you use a proper ant-virus program
to protect yourself from viruses.
You may also wish to change the default "Restricted
Sites Zone" setting to "Internet Zone".
